Does the Library have access to the New York Times Academic Pass?

Answer

Yes, as of 2023, the Library has purchased online access to support student, faculty, and staff use of nytimes.com. Please see our online guide for details about setting up a personal account and for information regarding historical, archival material and other database access. Below are answers to some FAQs regarding the New York Times Academic Pass.

  • All users must have a personal account on NYTimes.com to use Georgetown’s access.
    • Users may use an existing NYTimes.com account or create one in the process of establishing their access through Georgetown’s subscription. Just follow the instructions in the guide.
  • Users with paid subscriptions must cancel their subscriptions before using the nytimes.com account associated with that subscription.
    • If the user has a paid New York Times subscription and intends to use the same account with their Georgetown access, the subscription must be cancelled before claiming the Academic Pass. Users must contact Times Customer Service to cancel their subscription. This cannot be done by library staff.
    • Users with existing accounts that do not have paid subscriptions associated with them can use those accounts to claim their Times Academic Pass.
  • Access is not available to walk-in users or alumni.
    • Only current Georgetown faculty, students, and staff are eligible to claim a Times Academic Pass.
  • After claiming an Academic Pass, users can go directly to nytimes.com and sign into their account for access.
    • Student Academic Pass Accounts are valid until graduation. As part of the claiming process, students will be asked for their graduation date and their access will continue until December 31 of that year.
    • Faculty/Staff Academic Pass Accounts are valid for four years and can be renewed by repeating the Academic Pass signup process.
  • The New York Times news app for devices is available but access to other NYT properties is limited.
    • Users can download and use the NYT news app for devices.
    • The Academic Pass does not include access to NYT Cooking, Games (including the crossword), and The Athletic. Access to these requires separate, personal subscriptions.
