What are the steps for identifying research problems?

Starting with a general topic, the research process is iterative, and involves the following:

  • Breaking a topic down into concepts
  • Searching on those concepts and similar tools
  • Finding search tools and databases in which to search
  • Refining the original topic/concepts as necessary

For more information on identifying research problems and the research process, check out the Research Strategies & Tutorials guide. For information on the search tools at the library, take a look through the research guides and/or request a research consultation with a librarian. We're happy to help!
