Are the materials and equipment in the Maker Hub free?

Answer

Georgetown students, faculty, and staff can use the equipment in the Maker Hub at no cost, and the majority of the materials and consumables are free to use in reasonable amounts.

Using large quantities of supplies will require the user to pay a small fee or provide replacement materials. These policies are enforced on a case-by-case basis. If you are considering taking on a larger Maker Hub project, it is recommended that you contact makerhub@gerogetown.edu to discuss your specific needs. Generally, we ask the user to replace the materials used at the following thresholds:

Crafts:

3D Printing:

  • Using more than 50ml of Formlabs resin. Resin can be purchased from the Formlabs website, or the user can pay $0.15 per mL to the Maker Hub
  • Using more than 500g of PLA filament. PLA filament (specifically 2.85mm diameter) can be purchased from several sources, or the user can pay $20 per 1kg spool to the Maker Hub.

Laser Cutting:

  • Using more than 3 full boards of MDF. MDF can be purchased from MakerStock or an alternative source, or the user can pay $5 per board to the Maker Hub.
