Who sold or donated the land on which the University sits?

Answer

According to John Daley's Georgetown University: Origin and Early Years, the first tract of land was purchased by John Carroll for 75 pounds from Colonel William Deakins, Jr. and John Threlkeld. It should be noted that Georgetown University resides on land that was and still is the homeland of Indigenous peoples, including the Nacotchtank and Piscataway Conoy peoples.

For more information about Georgetown's history, we also recommend Robert Curran's A History of Georgetown University, which is the most thorough historical account of the university.
