"Site not configured" error page - how do I fix this?

I'm getting a "Site not configured" error page when visiting a webpage. What does this mean, and how do I fix this?

If you're seeing this page, you're trying to visit a website that isn't recognized by the Library's proxy server. The proxy has a list of URLs, and the site you picked wasn't on the list. Some common reasons this error occurs:

  • You don't need the proxy for free (or open access) resources. Generally we do not tell the proxy about free websites like 538, Wikipedia, or Data.gov
  • The Library may not have a subscription, or access to the site. We tell the proxy server only about subscribed websites. For example, you will see a "Site not configured" error when trying to access nytimes.com, because we don't have a subscription (although we have several other ways to read The New York Times online)
