How do I reauthorize my ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) software annually?

Answer

Before Starting

  • ArcMap will no longer be available as of December 17, 2023 and a new authorization file will not be available for download. This is due to Esri retiring the ArcMap product. Please begin transitioning to ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online.
  • Note that this process must be completed upon installation and on an annual basis. In January of each year, download a new authorization file from the Library's website, as indicated below, and repeat this process. Your software will stop working if this process is not completed annually.

Reauthorizing Software

  1. Download the authorization file from the Library's website. Make sure that you download the authorization file that covers the next 12 month period.
  2. Save the file to a convenient location on your computer, such as your Desktop.
  3. Locate the saved file and double-click the icon to open it.
  4. The ArcGIS Authorization Wizard opens. Proceed with the authorization process according to the initial authorization instructions.

Reauthorizing through ArcGIS Administrator

  1. If the above process does not work, reauthorize your software through ArcGIS Administrator.
  2. Open ArcGIS Administrator. It can often be found at Start Menu > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator.
ArcGIS Administrator as it opens normally.
  3. In the file tree on the left side of the window, select Desktop. In the ArcGIS Administrator, click Desktop in the file tree.
  4. Click the Authorize Now... button.
  5. This opens the ArcGIS Software Administration Wizard. Proceed with the authorization process according to the initial authorization instructions.

Confirm your Software's Authorization

  1. Open ArcGIS Administrator. It can often be found at Start Menu > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator.
  2. In the file hierarchy, click on Availability under Desktop.Under the file hierarchy of ArcGIS > Desktop > Availability, the individual software components show an expiration date.
  3. The table that appears should show an expiration date of "17-Dec-20XX" indicating when the software will expire.
