What does it mean if a book is listed as "on hold"?
Answer
This means that someone has "recalled" the book. The researcher who currently has the book will receive an email message notifying them that another researcher (unnamed) needs the book. When the book is returned, the person who placed the first Hold/Recall will get a message stating that they can now borrow the book. Once that researcher has finished with the book (for a maximum of 4 weeks, if there is another hold placed), the next researcher will receive an email saying that the book is ready to be borrowed.
Sometimes this process may take a while. If you'd like, you can click on the Can't Find It link from the library's homepage to learn how to obtain the book another way. (You'll click on the "Request a Book" tab to see the steps.)
